Quantitative assessments of pupillary light reflexes in neurocritically ill patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
The pupillary light reflex (PLR) is a component of bedside neurological examinations in intensive care units (neuroICUs). A quantitative pupillometer provides non-invasive and objective pupil reactivity parameter clinically significant for changes PLR neuroICUs. This article reviews the physiology importance parameters pupillometers. Moreover, this review discusses clinical applications pupillometers post-cardiac arrest prognostication monitoring elevated intracranial pressure worsening stroke, seizures, other diseases neuroICU. Quantitative pupillometry routine part an important tool

Abnormal Breathing Patterns Predict Extubation Failure in Neurocritically Ill Patients
In neurologically injured patients, predictors for extubation success are not well defined. Abnormal breathing patterns may result from the underlying neurological injury. We present three patients with abnormal breathing patterns highlighting failure of successful extubation as a result of these neurologically driven breathing patterns. Recognizing abnormal breathing patterns may be predictive...
متن کاملInterrater Reliability of Pupillary Assessments.
BACKGROUND Subjective scoring of pupil reactivity is a fundamental element of the neurological examination for which the pupillometer provides an objective measure. METHODS This single-blinded observational study examined interrater reliability of pupil exam findings between two practitioners and between practitioners and a pupillometer. RESULTS From 2329 paired assessments, the interrater ...
متن کاملHemoglobin levels and transfusions in neurocritically ill patients: a systematic review of comparative studies
INTRODUCTION Accumulating evidence suggests that, in critically ill patients, a lower hemoglobin transfusion threshold is safe. However, the optimal hemoglobin level and associated transfusion threshold remain unknown in neurocritically ill patients. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of comparative studies (randomized and nonrandomized) to evaluate the effect of hemoglobin levels on mo...
متن کاملAltered pupillary size and darkness and light reflexes in Alzheimer's disease.
The purpose was to compare resting pupil diameter in darkness and light, and the pupillary darkness and light reflexes between a group of patients with Alzheimer's disease and a group of healthy old people. Nine medication free patients with Alzheimer's disease and nine healthy control subjects, matched for sex and age with the patients, participated. There were six men and three women and the ...
